[ARCHIVED] Opportunities for student poets

We're looking for our first Youth Poet Laureate. Any recommendations?

Greenburgh Launches Two Teen Poetry Initiatives-- Please forward to exceptional youth poets

The Town of Greenburgh’s Arts and Culture Committee has long been active in the field of poetry. Their “Poetry Caravan” and “Learning to See - Ekphrastic Poetry Workshops,” both geared toward adults, are notable community projects. Now, they are now adding two new initiatives that will focus on teen poets.

The first initiative is a “Spoken Word” project for teen poets between 15 and 19 years of age. The inaugural “Spoken Word” event scheduled for April 22, 2021 will be virtual. It will feature interviews with teen poets, and their reading of their original poetry. If you live in or attend school in Greenburgh and would like to be a part of this National Poetry Month event, submit a video of yourself performing one of your poems to Greenburgh’s Director of Arts and Culture, sarahbracey.white@gmail.com. Poets can submit up to two videos, each of which must be no longer than five minutes long. Poems may be on any subject in any style. Include your name, age, the school you attend and your address with submissions. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2021. For further information, email Ms. White, at bracey0114@aol.com.

The second initiative is the creation of the position of Greenburgh’s Youth Poet Laureate. The poet selected for the two-year position will be charged with encouraging the creation of original poetry by young people in Greenburgh’s communities and creating or facilitating opportunities for youth to engage in poetry-related activities. Greenburgh’s First Youth Poet Laureate, a non-paying position, will be appointed in September 2021. The deadline for submission of a “letter of intent to apply” is August 2nd, 2021. Applicants must submit samples of their work and two letters of support from adults who are familiar with them and their work. If you are a poet between 16 and 20 years of age, a student in a school or college in Greenburgh, and would like to throw your hat in the ring, call Sarah Bracey White at 914-682-1574 or visit www.http://greenburghartsandculture.org/programs-.html for more details.

Thank you, Sarah Bracey White for always coming up with creative ideas!
