[ARCHIVED] In memory of a 9/11 hero: Hartsdale's Peter Woods

Peter was a remarkable human being, a 9/11 hero, a Hartsdale Fire Commissioner, a devoted leader of Sacred Heart Church and an exceptionally nice person. His passing is heartbreaking to the community.

An exceptional 9-11 hero and Hartsdale Fire Commissioner passed away on January 9th

Peter Woods, a 9/11 hero, was a model citizen--someone who always tried to help others. He spoke passionately about his experiences on 9/11 at our annual 9/11 memorial ceremonies. He spent many hours working with the Hartsdale Fire district as a FIre Commissioner. He fought for safety enhancements on Central Ave near Sacred Heart Church and did so much more. He was an exceptional human being, had a positive attitude about life--a model citizen and an inspiration. If you can help his family please consider this gofundme page set up by his friends. Giving back to Our Friend, Peter Woods

On January 9, 2021, after a short battle with Leukemia, we lost our dear friend Peter Woods. Peter was a loving and devoted husband to Sara and an amazing father to his girls: Anna & Olivia. This fundraiser has been established to help his family during this difficult time and to honor our friend and hero. Money raised will be used to help the family with the unplanned expenses from his death.

As the bedrock of his family, his friends, and most certainly the Hartsdale community, Peter always found ways to give back.

For 20 years he served as a New York City Police Sergeant and was one of the heroic first responders to rush to Ground Zero following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While he was left to deal with two autoimmune diseases—which later led to a kidney transplant—that didn’t stop Peter  from continuing to give.

He was a long-time member of the Emerald Society; a past President and Treasurer of the Sacred Heart Parents Club; a former member of the Sacred Heart Parish Council; and he later became a Commissioner of the Hartsdale Fire Department. He was also one of the founding members of POPPA, an organization dedicated to suicide prevention of New York City Police Officers as well as the co-chair of the Westchester County 9/11 Related Illnesses Memorial development committee.

Still, it was the small acts that defined him as a true neighbor and friend. His smiling face was the first to volunteer to man the grill during Sacred Heart’s “Field Day” and he religiously helped with the school’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon. Our children loved this gentle giant whose smile was always there to greet them.

Please join us in giving back to an incredible man who gave so much of himself for the greater good. Donations will be used to support Sara  and the girls during this difficult time.
