[ARCHIVED] Greenburgh Parks & Rec year in review: the slideshow

2022 was a great year for the Greenburgh Parks & Recreation department- with lots of accomplishments

The Greenburgh Parks and Recreation Department had an amazing and productive 2022.  Gerry Byrne, Commissioner and Joe Lucasey, Deputy Commissioner prepared the slideshow below highlighting some of the many accomplishments of the Parks & Recreation department during 2022. It's very impressive.  Click onto the slideshow below.  We have great plans for 2023.   A big thank you to all the members of the Greenburgh Parks & Recreation Advisory Board for their hard work and help overseeing the operations of the Parks & Recreation department.

Hightlights from Greenburgh Parks & Rec’s many achievements this year include:

  • A grassroots initiative resulted in a new playground and first-time parking lot being built at the Taxter Road Park in East Irvington.
  • Working with Councilwoman Gina Jackson and the Fairview Empowerment Group, four Greenburgh Summer Festival events took place at Massaro, Washington, Travis, and Presser parks.
  • At East Rumbrook Park an Archery Range was built this past spring,
  • Working with volunteers in the community, two new pollinator gardens were installed at AFV Park and the Harts Brook Park and Preserve.
  • At Massaro Park phase one of a two phase park improvement plan started and the new playground was just installed.
  • A playground upgrade at the Glenville Woods Park Preserve added a swing set and sensor board maze to the existing playground.
  • Community encouragement resulted in ten new community gardens being built at The Farm.
  • The Greenburgh Nutrition Program was able to secure a $100,000 grant to deliver weekend meals to residents.
  • A young teenager from Edgemont working with the Dept. got permission and installed “Little Free Libraries” at the Greenburgh Nature Center and Presser Park.
  • As part of an Eagle Scout project, the WWI memorial monument in Hartsdale was reconditioned and relocated to De Santi Plaza as part of the Veterans Memorial.
  • Our tennis and pool programs and facilities continue to serve the whole community, from tots to seniors.  Day Camp enrollment was sold out this year. Senior activities are back to normal and new programs are being introduced.
  • Celebrate Greenburgh, along with our annual fireworks display, return this past July, and over 2,500 people attended our annual Spooktoberfest.
  • Even though we bid farewell to some of our longtime and valued employees this year due to retirement, at the same time we welcomed our new employees along with Town Board Liaison Ellen Hendrickx.

Improvements underway or in planning phases include:

  • The Town Board adopted a finding statement for the Elmwood Preserve project that will result in the future dedication of 14.2 acres of parkland next to East Rumbrook Park.
  • The East Rumbrook Park basketball court renovation project and the construction of four new pickleball courts is now underway and will be completed in 2023.
  • Phase Two of Massaro Park improvements in 2023 will include installing a new retaining wall by the basketball court, completely renovating it, and repaving the walking paths in the park.
  • The department sent out a request for proposal for the development, operation, and management for an indoor and outdoor tennis facility at AFV Park and currently the town is in negotiation with a vendor. This proposal potentially involves $10 million dollars in facility development and could generate $22 million dollars or more in revenue over the next 30 years.
  • A turf cricket pitch is currently under construction on Webb Field at Presser Park.
