[ARCHIVED] Remembering Olivia Hooker on the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre

A Greenburgh resident, a national legend- Olivia Hooker was one of the last known survivors of the Tulsa race massacre of 1921 and the first African American woman to enter the US Coast Guard.

On the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race massacre of 1921 we  remember a Greenburgh legend, Oliva Hooker who was an american psychologist and professor and resident of Greenburgh.  She was one of the last known survivors of the Tulsa race massacre of 1921 and the first African American woman to enter the US Coast Guard.  She served in the Coast Guard until her unit was  disbanded in mid 1946 and was active in the town of Greenburgh until her death in 1918.  In 1915 President Barack Obama recognized Hooker's Coast Guard service and legacy at the 134th commencement  of the US Coast Guard Academy.  The USCGC Olivia Hooker will be named in her honor-- the sixty first Sentinel class cutter, due to be delivered to the Coast Guard after 2023.

Olivia Hooker always had time for Greenburgh and for students who live in Greenburgh.  All of us who knew her will never forget her kindness and her commitment to the town of Greenburgh.
This is an interview that students enrolled in the Greenburgh Xposure after school program had with Olivia Hooker in 2016. The you tube video was nominated for an EMMY award!
