Accomplishments

Since the Community Policing Unit’s inception in 1993, the unit has instituted many initiatives. Some of the units accomplishments are:

  • Assist in the feeding of local families in need at the Union Baptist Church on Tuesday evenings
  • Assisted the Hartsdale Chamber of Commerce and local civic associations in the evaluation of traffic patterns, which resulted in the alleviating of heavy congestion during the a.m. rush hour
  • Conducted a “Toys for Tots” program helping local needy children, as well as local hospital pediatric wards, receive toys
  • Conducted Safety Course at Union Child Day Care Center and Full Gospel Church several times a year, the course introduces the children to the proper use of E-911, bicycle operation and school bus safety
  • Coordinate with Greenburgh Community Development and local landlords to resolve issues in the Hartsdale area
  • Coordinated with Montrose Management Corporation to eliminate graffiti and vandalism to their properties at 90/100 Manhattan Avenue and 33 Oak Street
  • Developed a project with Habitat for Humanity to close down and renovate a degrading “crack house” at:
    77 Riverdale Avenue
  • Developed a Zoning Enforcement program, “ZEP,” which was instituted to better enforce the towns building, sanitation and zoning codes in conjunction with various other appropriate town departments. This program helped in removal of abandoned vehicles, repair of damaged sidewalks and roads and the condemnation of several properties.
  • Held seats on the “Manhattan Avenue Beautification Committee,” which in concert with the Thruway Authority cleaned the immediate area of Route 287 in exit 4 to exit 5
  • In January 1994, conducted Groceries for Guns Program in conjunction with Westchester County Department of Public Safety, which resulted in surrender of 89 firearms
  • In the summer of 1994, assisted the department’s Street Crime Unit and New York State Police with an investigation which resulted in the indictment of four major drug suppliers
  • Participated in radio station WHUD’s “Kids Fair” fingerprinting and photographing in excess of 1600 children in 1996 and 1997.
  • Received donation from Montrose Management of $1400 for Greenburgh Parks and Recreation to upgrade Washington Street Park
  • Enhanced the Bicycle Identification Program, where any town resident may have their bicycle stamped with a consecutive number and the framed labeled, this information is available to patrol officers twenty-four hours a day

Developing Relationships

In addition, the members assigned to the Greenburgh Community Policing Unit have developed a positive working relationship with residents, merchants and various organizations that they come into contact with. They lecture on bicycle safety and crime prevention at the elementary schools in the area and assist senior citizens by making referrals to Meals on Wheels, Office of the Aging and Social Services.
