The Technical Rescue Team was formed under the auspices of the Police Department in 1997 as a specialized response unit for extremely hazardous and difficult rescue situations. The team is entirely composed of volunteers including sworn and civilian members of the Police Department who hold certification as paramedics, and fire fighting personnel from the Fairview and Greenville Fire Departments. As with the Special Weapons and Tactics Team, these duties are in addition to the member’s normal assignments. Team members have completed hundreds of hours of advanced rescue training and practice twice monthly to maintain the skills necessary to conduct operations involving building collapses, hazardous materials, trench / construction site accidents, ice / water rescue, rope rescue, vehicle and heavy equipment extrication and confined spaces.
