EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES

The Greenburgh Police Department is unique in that it is one of the few police agencies to supply emergency medical services as well law enforcement services to its constituents. The department has been providing medical treatment/transport since the early 1950’s.

In 1980, the department sent its first officers to paramedic school at Jacobi Hospital located in the Bronx, New York. With their successful completion of the program, the Greenburgh Police Department became the first service in Westchester County to provide level 4 Paramedic care to its community.

On March 14, 1997, the Greenburgh Police Department expanded their ALS service into the six incorporated villages: Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings, Irvington, and Tarrytown. The population that the EMS program is responsible for serving approximately 7,000 patients annually.

MANPOWER

The Greenburgh Police department currently has an authorized strength of 116 police officers. All of these officers regardless of rank or position have received certification to provide basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The department currently has 31 certified Paramedics , and 12 Emergency Medical Technicians.

All members of the patrol division are afforded the opportunity to become Emergency Medical Technicians. Over the last year the department has been providing the NYS Basic Emergency Medical Technician program in house. This program is conducted in conjunction with the Westchester Community College. This 160-hour program trains personnel to provide appropriate care to the victims of medical and traumatic emergencies.

STAFFING

The police officers and paramedics assigned to the Paramedic Unit utilize NYS Department of Health certified ambulances and fly-cars (quick response vehicles) to respond to emergencies. A minimum of 2 paramedics are assigned to each tour of duty, although it is quiet common to have 4 or more per tour

EQUIPMENT

The EMS Unit has gone to great lengths in its efforts to remain "State of the Art " and keep up to date with the most current medical and rescue equipment available. This equipment currently includes 7 advanced cardiac monitors for the detection of heart attacks, 12 semi-automatic defibrillators (AED's), 4 Lucas chest compression devices, video laryngoscopy units for difficult airway management, Intra-osseous drills, pulse oximetry, powered stretchers, advanced rescue extrication equipment, Ballistic equipment and protective turn-out gear. 

FACILITIES

Due to the size of the town, Greenburgh Police Department EMS Units will routinely transport patients to several hospitals located within lower Westchester County. These hospitals regularly include but are not limited to

  1. Westchester County Medical Center
  2. White Plains Hospital
  3. Lawrence Hospital
  4. Saint John’s Riverside Hospital
  5. Saint John’s Riverside Oavilion @ Dobbs Ferry
  6. Nyack Hospital
  7. Phelps Memorial Hospital Medical Center

All of the above listed hospitals are within a 10-minute transport distance of Greenburgh.

Greenburgh EMS Units will generally transport patients to the nearest facility or if the situation allows, the facility of their choice.

SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS / OTHER TRAINING

The EMS Unit provides its members with related EMS training programs. By providing these courses our emergency personnel are prepared to deal with the assignments that they receive in a pragmatic and efficient manner. Local hospitals, NY State Fire Academy, Westchester County Fire Training Center and private training firms are some of the resources utilized for these training programs. Some examples of these courses are; Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support, Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, and Active Shooter Training.
