One of the most rewarding aspects of being Town Supervisor is the chance to meet people who are living saints. On Thursday, March 11th I had the privilege of having lunch with members of the Elmsford Rotary Club. For the 2nd time, I met a little girl from the Philippines(16 month old girl) who flew to the United Statesfor a heart implant with a pacemaker. The Elmsford Rotary Club raised the funds via their Gift of Life program so she could have the operation.

Robin, the 16 month old girl whose life was saved and I first met over a month ago at Elmsford Raceway. Luis Del Rosario, Special Assistant to the District Governor of Rotary 7230  & owner of the Raceway, introduced me to the family before the operation. Luis and his wife Barbara acted like surrogate parents. Despite their busy work schedule they accompanied Robin and her father to the hospital a time of times.

Robin and her family have had a great struggle.  Robin’s mom was diagnosed with lupus at the age of 27. This is a disease that impacts the auto immune system affecting different parts of the body. Robins mom lost her left eyesight. Robins parents named her Robin Faith –as only the faith of her parents will keep her surviving.

What a difference a few weeks makes. When I last saw Robin she looked frail and sick. Today, she’s cute, bubbly and healthy – a normal little girl. She’s flying back to the Philippineson Sunday.

The Rotary Gift of Life program helps others in need. If you’d like to make a financial contribution to the Gift of Life please send your check to Gift of Life, Elmsford Rotary, POBox 2, Elmsford, NY10523.
