UPDATE ON SAFETY --ASHFORD AVE BRIDGE
I have been receiving some calls and e mails from constituents about the safety of the Ashford Ave bridge, under construction. Some residents wonder if the bridge can accommodate all the trucks, cars and bus loads since one lane has been demolished - during the bridge construction. I reached out to the County Executive's office and received this reassuring news...
FROM THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE'S OFFICE ."have been advised that the Ashford Avenue Bridge is indeed safe in its current configuration and can accommodate car, truck and bus loads along its one ten-foot-wide lane in each direction. If the bridge was not safe, it would be closed. The bridge construction crew members and contractor are on or under the structure daily and if there were any problems, they would be found and rectified. In addition, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) conducted its biennial bridge inspection of this structure during the week of September 26. While it normally takes several months for inspection results to be reviewed and distributed, any existing issues would have been reported to the county immediately through the issuance of either a bridge flag (safety, yellow, or red) or what is known as a PIA meaning prompt immediate action is required. Not hearing anything immediately after the inspection is a very positive occurrence. Finally, I have been informed that there is no need or structural requirement to operate the bridge as a signal lane with alternating traffic controlled by flaggers."
