Reform candidates win Fairview, Hartsdale fire commissioner posts...Edgemont ballots approved
Release Date: December 09, 2014

Mike Goldstein was elected Hartsdale Fire Commissioner by a large margin. And, Claire Pizzuti was elected Fire Commissioner in Fairview --also by a large margin.  Both candidates had contested elections and both were supported by residents who would like to see fire district spending monitored more closely.  Over 300 people voted. I have been advised by phone that Mike received 210 votes to 100 for his opponent and Claire received 195 votes to 103 for her closest opponent.

Earlier this year some residents of both the Hartsdale & Fairview fire districts considered a referendum to place on the ballot consolidation of both districts. However, after discussion and reflection - a recommendation was made to review expenditures from within and to look for ways to work with the fire districts  to increase sharing and to cut costs.  Todays election is, in my opinion, a positive step that could lead to more efficiencies without jeopardizing fire protection.  During the recent election campaign the Fairview Fire District Monitoring Committee indicated that the Fairview Fire district is one of the costliest of the 880 independent fire districts in the state.

Claire Pizzuti and Mike Goldstein have both been involved in civic activities. Claire is a sergeant with both the Greenburgh Auxiliary Police and the Greenburgh Community Emergency Response team. She is on the board and treasurer of the Hilltop Farms Association. She has attended all meetings of the fire district since the Fairview Fire District Monitoring Committee was formed by Milt Hoffman and Dennis Kalian.

Mike Goldstein, a retired auditor for the federal government, has served on the Greenburgh Citizens Budget Committee and also served on a task force that looked into possible consolidation of fire district services.

Congratulations to the two winners in the contested elections and to Anthony Frasca who won an uncontested election in Hartsdale. Andrew Lee who lost his bid for Commissioner in Hartsdale  deserves our thanks for running as does Todd V Cammisa and Keith Guerra who provided the voters with a choice in Fairview. Those who run for public office deserve our appreciation because they help make our democracy work.
