Bicycle sharing at train stations proposed to help tourism...Ferry Festa in DF next Saturday
Release Date: September 29, 2013
On Saturday I attended a "Discover Irvington, NY" event on Main Street in Irvington. The village is trying to encourage tourism and was promoting the charming, quaint downtown (just seconds from the Irvington train station), the historic buildings, beautiful parks, terrific restaurants and shops. This event took place one week after the terrific Ardsley day celebration in Ardsley and a week before the world class Dobbs Ferry Festa (next Saturday).
I think that one way to successfully encourage even more tourism would be to expand the NYC Bicycle Shares program to the river villages in Westchester. My suggestion: Either the NYC bicycle sharing organization or local bicycle shops should consider placing bicycles/bike racks at the Hastings on Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington and Tarrytown train stations. People could take the train from NYC to one of the stations and spend the day enjoying a magnificent bike ride along the Hudson River. Each of the villages has amazing restaurants, shops and attractions that tourists would love.
I believe that a bicycle sharing initiative at the rivertown train stations would be a big boost to property values. Cyclists from NYC would be introduced to our fantastic villages. My guess: Once people spend some time in the River Villages, that they will want to move to our town. This concept could also be a big financial help to local downtown businesses since cyclists will shop in each of the local village downtown business areas. I would also like to see the bicycle sharing program expanded to the Harlem line- with bicycles available at the Scarsdale & Hartsdale train stations, White Plains train station and N White Plains train station.
Dobbs Ferry's annual Ferry Festa will be on October 5 this year. The event is next Saturday, with the streets in the downtown closed from 1:00 until 8:00 PM. This will be our 11th year. In previous years, we have drawn 15,000 people for the day. We will have more than 125 vendors and four stages, with 8 bands providing continuous entertainment.
This is a special type of event, since it is not sponsored by the Village, a Chamber, or any other recognized organization. It is put together by volunteers
The purpose of the Festa is two-fold: we want to bring attention to Dobbs Ferry's downtown, which helps Dobbs Ferry be a complete place to live, and we want to help build community. In addition to food, art, crafts, and other retail vendors, the Festa gives organizations the opportunity to get out to the streets and make people aware of what they are doing. Organizations like Concerned Families of Westchester and Friends of the Aqueduct have the chance to outreach and build support. The Rivertowns are also a place of cottage industries and the Festa gives people who do not normally have a presence on Main Street to make contact with people interested in what they are doing.
It is a fun day with activities for all ages. There will be four inflatables for kids, which in the spirit of the day are each operated by one of Dobbs Ferry's sports clubs to raise funds for their teams. This year, there will also be a presence of food trucks, with David DiBari from the Cookery and the Parlor bringing his pizza truck and friends to the street.
The Ferry Festa is Tactical Urbanism: a short term event intended to have a long term effect on the character of place and community.

ANOTHER REASON TO LOVE LIVING IN OUR TOWN--WORLD CLASS ENTERTAINMENT
My wife and I went to the Tarrytown Music Hall to hear Dianne Reeves, one of the best Jazz entertainer's in the world on Saturday evening. An amazing Jazz concert--the audience went wild with applause. Mark Morganelli does a fantastic job of bringing great jazz to our communities.
The Tarrytown Music Hall is a great concert hall. Upcoming performances include Darlene Love, Arturo Sandoval and Joy Behar--among others.
