New initiatives to address future power outages/emergencies...TASTE OFF THIS SATURDAY AT WOODLANDS
Release Date: April 24, 2013

The Greenburgh Town Board heard a very interesting presentation from emergency response professionals (including representatives of Con Ed, the Police Chief, state emergency officials and the Deputy DIrector of National Center for Disaster Preparedness Center at tonights Town Board meeting (which is streamed on our website: www.greenburghny.com).

The Police Chief discussed the purchase of new software which will enable the town to provide improved communication services to residents after a storm. We will now be able to notify residents , via cell phones, of future emergencies. People will be able to sign up to receive up to date information as to how the town is dealing with emergencies. This notification system differs from the e list and will only be used in the event of emergencies.

The Chief indicated that the town will be taking steps to place generators at traffic light locations -to keep the lights on. He is also recommending that a generator be placed at the Theodore Young Community Center, a location that has been used as an emergency shelter.

Con Ed is adding about 170 new fuses and switches to the Greenburgh system. If there is an outage the impact will be felt by fewer people. They are also working with industry consultants and trying to address infrastructure problems. They are considering using licensed electricians to help expedite power restorations after storms. NYS is considering the possibility of requiring generators in some gas stations- especially stations on well travelled roads (to reduce the problem we had last year when stations were unable to sell gas.
NYS is planning training programs for emergency responders and wants to improve the tracking of people who have major medical needs.
The presentation at tonights Town Board meeting contained alot of useful and interesting information. Richard Edelson of the CERT team organized the presentation. I recommend that you listen to the presentation--very helpful info.!
